Dress / Apparel:
What should I wear for a day tour on the South Rim?
In summer:Temperatures at Grand Canyon average between the mid-eighties and nineties. During the monsoon season, we may see a scattered thunderstorm sweep through the canyon.(July, August,September) Come prepared with a light jacket just in case we are lucky enough to witness any such storm. Always wear comfortable shoes that are well broken in. Short sleeved shirts that are made from a breathable material are always a good bet.
In winter: Come prepared to see Grand Canyon in its' breathtaking beauty! At 7000 ft, the Grand Canyon gets its' fair share of snow. Usually the snow will be gone within a few days, but prepare for winter temps. On average the daily highs range from the mid-twenties to forties. Dress in appropriate winter clothing, with a heavy coat .
What should I wear for a day hike on the South Rim:
As we descend from the canyon rim, you will notice the temperature begin to rise. The canyon has tenancy to be 20 degrees hotter at the bottom. Luckily we will not be attempting to hike to river, but you will notice yourself warming up as we start to hike. Come dressed in comfortable, broken in shoes. Breathable material is the recommended choice, but any clothing that you feel comfortable in is appropriate . A hat is highly recommended in the summer.
We don't start leading day hikes until April of each year. In the spring months, bring a light jacket, and an under layer to transition into as we hike through shady microclimates. The spring is known to be a bit windy at times.
What gear is provided on a day hike?
We provide a quality day pack, that is big enough to hold your camera, water, sunscreen, and extra clothing. We also provide trekking poles that are adjustable to you. Your guide will hike in extra snacks and water.
What if I need to use the toilet on the trail:
If you choose to hike the Bright Angel trail, there are pit toilets located at the 1.5 and 3 mile rest stops. The South Kaibab trail has a pit toilet located at Cedar Ridge , which is 1.5 miles down the trail . The Hermit trail does not have any facilities. Your guide will carry the appropriate equipment for any emergency!
Policy questions:
What is the two person minimum?
We require a minimum of two (2) persons to run a trip. The day tour pricing will not be affected by this policy. On all of our day hikes a two person minimum will affect the pricing. As our booking takes shape each day we will be able to determine if the minimum price will affect your trip. The two person minimum for a day hike is $175.00 / per person. All fees and gear included.
What is the age cut off for a day hike?
We would love to take everyone ,but unfortunately the Grand Canyon is a place of extremes. Between the heat and the altitude even people who are in shape can have trouble. The cut off age for children is 8 years old. We love to be amazed by older hikers, and often remark that we hope to be in as good of shape, but we do have a cut off age of 75 years young. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Do I have to sign a waiver for the day hike / tour?
All adventurers will be asked to sign a waiver.
